Anthony Kila accused of using fake professorship at Nigerian university
An investigation has found no evidence that Anthony Kila, the Pro-Chancellor of Michael and Cecilia Ibru University (MCIU), holds the academic rank of professor. Despite being publicly addressed as a professor and described on university websites as a “Jean Monnet Professor of Strategy and Development,” searches of recognized academic institutions and official directories yielded no record of such credentials.
Kila claimed his professorship was awarded in 2016 by the European Centre for Advanced and Professional Studies (ECAPS), allegedly based in Cambridge, United Kingdom. However, investigations into UK Companies House and Nigeria’s Corporate Affairs Commission found no evidence that ECAPS exists. Furthermore, the European Education and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA), which manages the Jean Monnet programme, stated that Kila does not appear in its public directory of project coordinators.
As Pro-Chancellor, Kila chairs the governing council responsible for the administration, policy, and finance of MCIU. While a university spokesperson stated the institution has no evidence to disprove Kila’s claims, the investigation noted that his profiles on the MCIU and CIAPS websites contain suspicious qualifications used to embellish his academic standing.
