Academic credential controversy at Michael and Cecilia Ibru

Overview

Investigations into Anthony Kila, the Pro-Chancellor of Michael and Cecilia Ibru University (MCIU), revealed no evidence that he holds the academic rank of professor. Although Kila was described on university websites as a “Jean Monnet Professor of Strategy and Development,” searches of official directories and academic institutions yielded no records of such credentials. Kila claimed his title was awarded in 2016 by the European Centre for Advanced and Professional Studies (ECAPS), but investigations into UK and Nigerian corporate registries found no evidence that ECAPS exists. Additionally, the European Education and Culture Executive Agency stated Kila does not appear in its directory of project coordinators.

Following these findings, MCIU suspended Kila pending an investigation into his credentials. Kila has rejected allegations of being a “fake professor,” maintaining his legitimacy. In response to the controversy, the university removed Kila’s profile and photographs from its official website.
