Anthony Kila faces scrutiny over academic credentials

Political economist Professor Pat Utomi has defended commentator Anthony Kila against online attacks questioning his educational background. While Utomi noted he has not personally verified Kila’s academic certificates or letters of appointment, he dismissed claims that Kila never attended school as “spectacularly stupid,” citing Kila’s intellectual capacity and their long-standing acquaintance since 2006.

The controversy stems from investigative reports by Premium Times questioning Kila’s professorial title and academic qualifications. This has led to broader discussions regarding institutional integrity and the verification standards of Nigerian universities and media organizations. Following the scrutiny, ARISE News reportedly barred Kila from its platforms.

The situation has sparked a debate over the responsibility of media outlets to fact-check the credentials of public intellectuals and the potential for social media mobs to engage in harmful character assassination.
