Anthony Kila academic credential controversy

Overview

Political analyst Anthony Kila is facing allegations of academic fraud following an investigative report by Premium Times. The report questioned the authenticity of Kila’s bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees, as well as his professorial title.

In response to these allegations, ARISE News indefinitely suspended Kila from all its platforms, stating he failed to respond to inquiries within a ten-day window. Additionally, Michael and Cecilia Ibru University has requested that Kila step aside pending an investigation into his professorial status, while Nigeria’s Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has launched an investigation into the matter.

While some figures, such as political economist Pat Utomi, have defended Kila—dismissing claims that he never attended school as “spectacularly stupid”—the controversy has prompted broader debates regarding the verification standards of Nigerian universities and the responsibility of media organizations to fact-check the credentials of public intellectuals.
