Anthropic names Mariano-Florentino Cuéllar chief global affairs officer as US AI tensions rise

Anthropic announced the appointment of Mariano-Florentino Cuéllar, a former California Supreme Court justice and ex‑president of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, as its first chief global affairs officer. Cuéllar will report to Anthropic president Daniela Amodei and work from the company’s San Francisco headquarters. His remit covers managing relationships with the U.S. government and other nations as Anthropic expands its AI offerings.

The hire comes amid strained ties with the Trump administration, including a Pentagon designation of Anthropic as a supply‑chain risk, a lawsuit over that blacklist, and recent export controls on its advanced models Fable 5 and Mythos 5 that were lifted after security commitments. Cuéllar, who has served on Anthropic’s Long‑Term Benefit Trust and co‑led a study that helped shape California’s AI safety law SB 53, is stepping down from the trust, which is now seeking a replacement.
