Anthropic repairs ties with Trump administration after Pentagon dispute
Anthropic is rebuilding its relationship with the Trump administration following a period of intense conflict regarding AI safety and national security. US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick stated that the AI firm is “back on the right side” of the government, signaling a de-escalation of tensions.
The dispute originated from Anthropic’s refusal to allow its Claude models to be used for domestic surveillance or autonomous weaponry. This led Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to designate the company as a national security supply-chain risk, which restricted its access to certain military contracts. However, a US District Judge recently ruled in Anthropic's favor, voiding the Pentagon's designation as illegal and baseless.
Earlier friction included the Commerce Department imposing temporary export restrictions on Anthropic’s Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models in June, though these were lifted shortly after. As the company moves toward a potential initial public offering (IPO), the resolution of these regulatory and legal battles is seen as a critical step in stabilizing its standing as core infrastructure. Anthropic's revenue run rate reportedly reached $65 billion in August.
