Anthropic wins court ruling against Pentagon supply chain risk designation
A U.S. federal court has ruled that the Pentagon's designation of AI company Anthropic as a supply chain risk was illegal and without foundation. U.S. District Judge Rita Lin issued a 59-page decision stating that the Department of Defense's actions were arbitrary, capricious, and constituted retaliation against the company for its criticism of the administration.
The conflict originated in February after Anthropic refused government pressure to remove safety guardrails that prevent its Claude AI models from being used for mass surveillance or the development of autonomous weapons. In response, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth labeled the company a supply chain risk, which effectively barred it from federal contracts and pressured defense contractors to cease business with the firm.
Judge Lin noted that invoking national security is not a 'blank check' to punish critics. The court also rejected the Pentagon's claims that Anthropic could remotely disable or alter its models once deployed in military systems. Additionally, the ruling struck down improper penalties applied by eight other agencies, including the Treasury and State Departments.
