Anthropic's Doomsday-Themed AI Commercial Sparks Backlash
Anthropic released a television commercial that opens with a burning house and later shows a cemetery scene, facial‑recognition scanning and other bleak imagery. The ad, aired during the Argentina World Cup quarter‑final, attempts to present the company as a responsible guardian of artificial‑intelligence safety and asks viewers, “Who will hit the brakes if AI becomes dangerous?”
The spot has been widely mocked, including by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who called it a misstep. Critics say the advertisement paradoxically suggests AI could kill people, undermining its goal of building trust in Anthropic’s Claude chatbot. The company’s reputation is further tarnished by earlier actions: it abandoned a safety pledge that would halt model training when guardrails fail, faced allegations of providing AI tools for selecting Iranian strike targets, and was flagged by China’s vulnerability database for security concerns.
Anthropic was founded by former OpenAI staff aiming to make AI safer, but the ad’s controversial tone and the company’s recent controversies have sparked debate over whether its messaging aligns with its safety commitments.
