US AI policy, equity stakes, security, and fallout
Overview
The Trump administration’s AI executive order links frontier‑model development to a $1.5 trillion Pentagon modernization plan and expands a voluntary 30‑day pre‑release security review. In June 2026 the Commerce Department lifted emergency export controls on Anthropic’s Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5. Early July OpenAI entered talks to sell the U.S. government a 5 % equity stake valued at $42‑50 billion, a proposal later broadened to include Anthropic and backed by Senator Bernie Sanders. A June Verasight poll showed 69 % public support for the Sanders‑backed AI Sovereign Wealth Fund Act. The White House launched Gold Eagle, an AI‑powered clearinghouse for vulnerability reports, and a formal AI‑cybersecurity coordination group involving the Treasury, National Cyber Director, DoD and NSA.
On 16 July OpenAI disclosed a Full‑Access mode bug that unintentionally deleted files on macOS and Linux systems, affecting developers’ home directories and, in one case, an entire production database. The flaw prompted high‑level resignations and two major lawsuits: Apple renewed its suit accusing OpenAI of poaching former Apple engineers to accelerate AI‑hardware efforts, and the New York Times with 16 other media outlets sought sanctions over alleged use of copyrighted material in OpenAI’s training data.
A 19 July ADP People at Work 2026 survey found only one in five workers globally feels their job is safe from AI, while a UK IPPR report warned AI could displace up to eight million jobs and called for legal duties, a levy for retraining and portable benefits. These developments intensify scrutiny of AI’s operational security, legal exposure, and labour‑market impact in the United States and abroad.
