Antimafia Commission head Cracolici calls for health review at Palermo's Pagliarelli prison
Antonello Cracolici, president of the regional Antimafia Commission, announced during the “Liberi di scegliere” event that he will convene regional and municipal guarantors and representatives of the health service (Asp) to assess the state of prison healthcare at the Pagliarelli correctional facility in Palermo.
The meeting, organized by municipal guarantor for detainees Pino Apprendi, gathered about a hundred inmates together with prison officials, the city’s social affairs assessor, a prosecutor, the vice‑president of the surveillance tribunal and a national guarantor office member. Discussions focused on chronic overcrowding, the re‑educational role of sentences, difficulties in reintegration and the need for better medical assistance for detainees. Cracolici stressed that solutions must go beyond harsher penalties and that the commission can propose measures to improve the social network supporting prisoners.
