António Costa tours EU capitals to discuss 2028–2034 budget
European Council President António Costa has launched a tour of EU capitals to discuss the upcoming long-term budget for 2028–2034. Costa emphasized that an agreement must be reached by the end of the year to prevent funding interruptions that could impact agriculture, research, and industry.
During visits to the Baltic states, leaders highlighted the need for the budget to address heightened security concerns on the EU's eastern flank. Latvia has indicated a need for approximately 7 billion euros to offset increased military spending and economic impacts from the war in Ukraine. The Baltic states also support a Commission proposal to allocate 131 billion euros toward defense and space.
In discussions with Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda, Costa stated that the EU aims to be prepared for a collective response to hybrid threats, such as infrastructure sabotage and GPS interference, by 2030. The tour continues through mid-September, covering most EU member states to prepare for upcoming European Council summits.
