António Costa emphasizes EU border protection during Athens meeting

European Council President António Costa met with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in Athens to discuss regional security and the European Union's strategic priorities. Costa emphasized that the EU's priority is to protect the interests of its member states, specifically highlighting the need to secure EU borders, including maritime borders, to ensure the Union can respond effectively to challenges.

Addressing tensions in the Aegean, Costa noted that Turkey's constructive participation is essential for promoting cooperation, as outlined in European Council conclusions. He acknowledged Greece's strategic importance regarding the Mediterranean and the Middle East, noting that the EU must better understand regional perspectives that may not be immediately apparent from Brussels.

On the economic front, Costa stressed the importance of the upcoming Multiannual Financial Framework for 2028-2034. He stated that an agreement must be reached by the end of the year to avoid funding cuts for researchers, farmers, students, and businesses. He called for a budget structure that reflects new realities, prioritizing defense, security, competitiveness, innovation, and strategic resilience, while maintaining support for common agricultural and cohesion policies.
