Ukraine leaders discuss peace terms and EU support in Kyiv
During ceremonies marking Ukraine's 35th Independence Day in Kyiv, European Council President António Costa emphasized that the European Union will continue to support Ukraine and increase pressure on Russia until the invasion stops. Costa stated that Ukraine must be the sole entity to define the terms of any lasting peace, which must respect its sovereignty and territorial integrity. He also noted that the EU is focused on the disbursement of a 90 billion euro loan intended to support the country.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called for the war to become “painful enough” to force Russia into peace negotiations. He reported that Russian war spending has reached approximately 330 billion euros, while Ukraine faces a deficit of about 27 billion euros. Zelenskyy highlighted the need for increased military aid, specifically regarding air defense and drone production.
Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard added that while EU membership is the best security guarantee for Ukraine, NATO membership would significantly strengthen the security of the entire Alliance and serve as a deterrent to Russia. Costa was also honored with the Order of Europe of Ukraine during his visit.
