Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar met with European Council President António Costa in Budapest to discuss several critical issues regarding the future of the European Union. A primary focus of the meeting was the EU's next seven-year budget cycle, set to begin in 2028. Magyar stated that Hungary will only support the budget if the final compromise aligns with the interests of Hungarian citizens and businesses.

Additional topics included the suspension of a daily one million euro fine imposed on Hungary under the previous administration regarding migration management. Magyar also emphasized that Hungary will maintain its current legal framework and physical border controls to combat illegal migration, citing recent events in Ceuta. Furthermore, the Prime Minister expressed that Hungary does not support an accelerated accession process for any current EU candidate countries.

António Costa is currently conducting a tour of EU member states to gather perspectives on long-term priorities, including defense, competitiveness, and support for Ukraine. Costa noted that while positions on the budget remain divided among member states, he looks forward to finding constructive solutions.
