António Costa warns of EU budget funding risks during Slovakia visit

European Council President António Costa has warned that EU member states must reach an agreement on the long-term budget for 2028–2034 by the end of this year. Failure to secure a deal could result in a funding gap affecting farmers, businesses, students, researchers, and innovators.

Costa is beginning a tour of EU member states, starting with a visit to Slovakia, where he is scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Robert Fico. The discussions will focus on the upcoming budget, defense, security, competitiveness, and EU enlargement.

The proposed budget aims to shift priorities by allocating more resources toward defense and security alongside traditional areas such as agriculture, regional development, research, and green and digital transitions. Costa noted that after a political agreement is reached, approximately one year will be needed to establish the necessary legislative and administrative frameworks in Brussels and member states.
