UN Security Council candidates face vetoes in sixth Secretary-General straw poll

The United Nations Security Council's sixth informal straw poll to select a successor to António Guterres has resulted in a deadlock, as all seven current candidates faced opposition from permanent members. The voting process, which introduced colored ballots to distinguish the votes of the five permanent members (the US, China, Russia, France, and the UK) from the ten elected members, revealed significant geopolitical divisions.

Rebeca Grynspan of Costa Rica maintained her lead with nine encouraging votes, but her candidacy was met with two negative votes from permanent members. Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett of Guyana and Rafael Grossi of Argentina both received eight encouraging votes and two vetoes from permanent members each.

The lack of consensus among the permanent members, who hold veto power, has stalled the selection process. While the straw polls are non-binding, they indicate the difficulty of reaching a recommendation for the General Assembly. Diplomatic sources suggest that the current impasse may lead to the consideration of new candidates, such as Nikolay Mladenov, Lana Nusseibeh, or Feridun Hadi Sinirlioglu.
