All seven official candidates faced opposition from at least one permanent member.

The failure to reach consensus has led to discussions regarding potential new candidates, including Nikolay Mladenov, Lana Nusseibeh of the UAE, and Feridun Haci Sinirlioğlu. US Representative Mike Waltz noted that nations maintain the sovereign right to propose additional candidates, emphasizing the need for a leader capable of guiding the organization through current global crises.

Amidst this impasse, Secretary-General Guterres has issued urgent calls for a fundamental reset of UN peace operations and maritime security, warning that the number of armed conflicts is at its highest level since 1945.
