United Nations and global leaders push for frontier AI regulation
World leaders and the United Nations are intensifying efforts to establish international governance for advanced artificial intelligence. The 'Call for Control of Frontier AI Models' initiative, launched by Finnish President Alexander Stubb and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, has been endorsed by over 20 nations, including Germany, Canada, and Australia. The initiative calls for binding safety measures and the creation of an international institution to set standards and verify capabilities.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres has welcomed the initiative and the release of the first thematic brief from the Independent International Scientific Panel on AI. Separately, Guterres has issued a plea for a global moratorium on lethal autonomous weapons systems, or 'killer robots,' arguing that delegating life-and-death decisions to algorithms is incompatible with human dignity.
In the private sector, OpenAI has urged the United States to lead the development of global technical standards to prevent a fragmented regulatory landscape. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is scheduled to brief the UN Security Council on the intersection of AI and international security, a meeting convened by France.
