António Guterres visits Cyprus to facilitate peace negotiations

UN Secretary-General António Guterres visited Cyprus for the first time in 16 years, meeting with leaders through separate sessions, a joint dinner, and a trilateral summit. Following these discussions, Guterres stated he does not intend to call for another unsuccessful 5+1 summit immediately. Instead, he has assigned “homework” to the parties to establish the necessary conditions for successful negotiations.

Guterres announced his decision to organize a new expanded 5+1 meeting once confidence-building measures, methodology, and negotiation content are prepared, following consultations with both sides and guarantor nations. In response, President Tufan Erhürman expressed readiness for weekly meetings to complete these tasks. While Christodoulides initially did not respond, he later scheduled a meeting for August 26. The leaders are currently expected to meet again on September 2.
