António Guterres warns that actions hindering Cyprus confidence-building are discouraging

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has responded to a letter from Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman, expressing concern over actions that hinder confidence-building in Cyprus. Guterres described recent developments—including the reported cancellation of music festivals, a Barcelona football camp, and interference with diplomatic contacts—as 'discouraging' and contrary to his repeated calls for mutual trust.

In his response, Guterres emphasized the necessity of continued contact and cooperation between the two communities to create the conditions required for a lasting solution. He has instructed his personal envoy, María Ángela Holguín, to prioritize working with both sides to implement confidence-building measures.

Separately, Greek Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides indicated that his administration has responded positively to UN proposals regarding a potential joint meeting between the leaders of the two communities. He expressed hope for positive developments and noted that the UN would announce dates for Ms. Holguín’s visit within October.
