António Guterres calls for end to fossil fuel subsidies

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has called for an immediate end to fossil fuel subsidies, describing the practice as “subsidizing suicide.” Speaking in Yerevan, Armenia, ahead of the COP17 biodiversity summit, Guterres warned that hydrocarbons are “making our planet boil” and acting as a scourge for global biodiversity.

Despite a 2022 commitment by nearly 200 states to reduce harmful subsidies by $500 billion annually by 2030, progress remains limited. Guterres highlighted a stark financial imbalance: for every dollar invested in nature protection, approximately $30 is spent on activities that destroy it. Total public subsidies with negative impacts on the climate and nature are estimated at $2.6 trillion per year.

In a related development, EU Finance Ministers have called for the gradual phase-out of fossil fuel subsidies during the upcoming COP31 negotiations in November.
