Chile boosts police crackdowns and emergency aid as severe weather hits the north

Municipalities across Chile coordinated joint police operations to curb crime. In Rancagua, 144 vehicle checks and 49 identity controls led to 37 traffic citations, the removal of six motorcycles and the detention of two offenders. Santo Domingo’s police chase resulted in three arrests for vehicle theft, while in Coihueco and Llay Llay Carabineros and the Police of Investigations carried out preventive patrols and identity checks. A nationwide anti‑migrant raid in the macro‑zone north recorded 174 vehicle inspections, 108 identity checks, 53 foreign‑person controls, 33 infractions and three detentions, also seizing 70 kg of agricultural products.

The country also faced a series of weather‑related emergencies. Heavy rains and flooding in the north left 18 people missing, over 15 000 homes damaged and more than 180 tonnes of relief supplies dispatched. The Air Force sent a Boeing 737 and helicopters to Atacama, delivering food, medical kits and rescuing isolated residents, including three people rescued in the Copiapó valley. In Alto del Carmen, investigators recovered the bodies of two women after an avalanche, and Carabineros rescued a mother and her two children alive after a seven‑hour trek in Andacollo. The Maule region prepared for additional frontal systems with coordinated municipal monitoring and early‑warning alerts.

Drug‑related seizures continued, with Antofagasta reporting a historic 51 tonnes of narcotics seized in six months and a Los Ángeles operation confiscating more than 290 containers of coca‑base and other substances. A desert raid in Antofagasta recovered four stolen vehicles slated for illegal dismantling. These combined security and humanitarian actions illustrate Chile’s intensified response to crime and natural disasters.
