Chile-Argentina organized‑crime crackdown expands

Entities: Policía de Investigaciones de Chile · Carabineros de Chile · Gendarmería Nacional Argentina · Fabián Barrientos Andrade · Venezuelan suspects

Overview

The binational crackdown that began with coordinated raids in San Javier and Villa Alegre has broadened its scope. In Chile, customs and police used a truck scanner at the Ollagüe crossing to uncover 29 cocaine packets, adding to earlier interceptions that totalled 458 kg of cannabis and 4 kg of cocaine. On 22 July municipal and national police intensified joint operations across central and northern Chile. Vehicle checks in Rancagua (144 inspections) and identity controls yielded dozens of traffic citations, the removal of six motorcycles and the detention of two offenders; similar patrols in Santo Domingo, Coihueco and Llay Llay resulted in arrests for vehicle theft. A nationwide anti‑migrant raid in the macro‑zone north inspected 174 vehicles, performed 108 identity checks, recorded 53 foreign‑person controls, seized 70 kg of agricultural products and detained three individuals. The same period saw severe weather in the north: heavy rains left 18 people missing, over 15 000 homes damaged and more than 180 tonnes of relief supplies dispatched. The Air Force delivered food, medical kits and rescued isolated residents, while investigators recovered two avalanche victims in Alto del Carmen. Drug‑seizure activity remained high. Antofagasta reported a historic 51 tonnes of narcotics seized in six months; a desert raid recovered four stolen vehicles slated for illegal dismantling. In Los Ángeles, Carabineros OS7 seized over 290 containers of coca‑base and related substances and, on 24 July, detained seven suspects (three Venezuelan, four Chilean) linked to a Venezuelan‑origin trafficking network, confiscating base paste, hydro‑chloro‑cocaine, a shotgun, a bullet‑proof vest and cash. Across the Andes, Chaco province police in Argentina completed 263 actions, detaining 60 people and seizing motorcycles, firearms, marijuana and cocaine doses. A July sweep at the Colchane border detained five foreigners and expelled an Ecuadorian.
