Antofgasta region launches tourism forum and community space projects

On 25 June the municipality of Tocopilla and the Antofagasta regional government signed an agreement to host the Pre‑Forum of the Sub‑National Territories of the Bio‑Cicloid Capricorn Corridor. The event, financed with an $85 million allocation from the National Regional Development Fund, will bring about 250 officials, experts and private‑sector representatives from Chile, Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay. Governor Ricardo Díaz and Mayor Ljubica Kurtovic highlighted the forum’s role in strengthening territorial integration and promoting a future port in Tocopilla, noting that “if we manage to push this vision of generating a port in Tocopilla, it could be the great port that Chile needs…”.

Separately, the mining company Minera Antucoya, together with the municipality of María Elena, inaugurated three public‑space projects funded with $80 million. The initiatives include the “Pampa que Lee y Crea” learning area at the local technical school, the restored Cancha Orella sports field, and the renovated Paseo Orella pedestrian walkway. Mayor Viviana Cuello thanked the company, saying “I appreciate the work of Minera Antucoya, because when the public, private and social organisations work together we see a more inclusive and happier community”. The projects aim to improve cultural, sporting and recreational facilities for residents of the commune.
