Chile mining debt, copper prices, diversification 2026
Entities: Cochilco · Chile · London Metal Exchange · Peru · Citi
Overview
Municipalities in Chile’s far‑north received the third 2026 Royalty Minero installment, completing the scheduled quarterly disbursements. State‑run Codelco’s situation has worsened: 2025 copper output fell to 332 kt, the first quarter of 2026 was the weakest in two decades and gross debt rose to US$26.3 bn, roughly 50 % above 2021 levels. Operating cash‑flow of US$3.9 bn was outstripped by investment and interest outlays of US$6.1 bn, leaving net profit near US$416 m. Credit agencies now rate Codelco Baa2‑BBB+, warning that without state support the rating could slip to junk. To improve liquidity Codelco is pursuing asset sales, public‑private partnerships and a tighter mining plan, while emphasising its lithium partnership with SQM at Novandino, which has boosted output 30 % and delivered US$290 m in payments.
Copper futures have steadied around US$6.30 lb as supply‑tightening in Chile and Peru shifted the market outlook from surplus to a 150 kt deficit. Falling visible inventories in China and low LME warehouse stocks have supported prices; by late July the LME price rose to 626 cents/lb (US$13 810/t) and Citi reaffirmed a US$15 000/tonne 2026 target.
Environmental scrutiny intensified after a Chilean court ordered a new probe of Anglo American’s Los Sulfatos tunnel beneath the protected Yerba Loca glacier. At the ASIVA Summit, technology providers such as Minnovex highlighted innovation, start‑ups and international collaboration as essential to address water scarcity, stricter standards and declining ore grades.
Chinese miner Zijin secured US$709 m to expand Argentine lithium operations under a 30‑year fiscal‑stability regime, underscoring continued Chinese interest in the lithium triangle.
The government’s diversification drive progressed, with the trenchless sewer‑upgrade programme in Araucanía at 52 % completion and power‑restoration crews restoring electricity to about 85 % of affected households.
