During the LXVI Ordinary Session of the Council of Public Universities and Affiliated Institutions (CUPIA), the National Association of Universities and Higher Education Institutions (ANUIES) raised urgent concerns regarding the financial sustainability of Mexico's public higher education system.

Luis González Placencia, head of ANUIES, reported that while public university enrollment grew by 18 percent between 2018 and 2026, these institutions are facing an accumulated budget deficit of 55.4 billion pesos. This shortfall is attributed to annual budget allocations that have failed to keep pace with the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) deflator.

Leticia Jiménez Zamora, rector of the Universidad Autónoma de Guerrero (UAgro), emphasized the critical role of these institutions, noting they educate 62 percent of the national student population and generate 90 percent of the country's scientific, humanistic, and technological research.

In addition to financial issues, ANUIES called for increased government intervention to ensure the physical security of students following recent reports of violence and disappearances in university environments.
