Modi holds bilateral talks with Malaysia and Ethiopia at BRICS Summit

On the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held several high-level bilateral meetings to strengthen strategic partnerships.

With Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, discussions focused on advancing the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Key areas of cooperation include trade, investment, defense, semiconductors, the digital economy, energy, and fintech. Notably, Malaysia has agreed to the establishment of an Indian Consulate General in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. Additionally, the two leaders discussed the potential extradition of Zakir Naik to India, a matter Malaysia is considering under the rule of law.

In meetings with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali, the leaders reviewed progress in economic cooperation, defense, and security. Ethiopia expressed significant interest in strengthening defense ties and invited Indian mining companies to invest in the country.

Other diplomatic engagements at the summit included discussions with leaders from Vietnam, the UAE, and Iran, as well as a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, where both sides emphasized that differences should not escalate into disputes. The summit also marked the 20th anniversary of BRICS, with discussions centered on global governance reform and the collective voice of the Global South.
