BRICS ministerial meetings and upcoming 18th Summit
Overview
Throughout August 2026, India continued its BRICS presidency by hosting various sectoral meetings under the theme ‘Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability’. The 12th BRICS Environment Ministers’ Meeting focused on climate resilience, sustainable development, and environmental governance, specifically addressing afforestation, forest fire management, and the circular economy.
Preparations for the upcoming 18th BRICS Summit, scheduled for September 12-13, 2026, at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, have intensified. As the chair of the 11-member bloc, India has facilitated over 350 high-level meetings across more than 25 cities to advance strategic partnerships in politics, security, economy, and culture.
Current diplomatic efforts via the Sherpa channel aim to build consensus on a joint statement covering the West Asia crisis, civilian protection, and the movement of waterways. Technical discussions are also underway regarding mechanisms to reduce transaction costs by increasing trade in national currencies.
In an effort to strengthen regional connectivity and bolster South Asian participation within the Global South, India has extended invitations to non-member neighbors Nepal and Bangladesh for the summit’s outreach sessions. The inclusion of Bangladesh is noted for its current chairmanship of BIMSTEC.
