Anwar Ibrahim targets wage fairness and corruption in Malaysia

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has announced that the Malaysian government is finalizing measures to ensure fairer wages and address income gaps, with details expected during the Budget 2027 presentation on October 9. This includes a potential increase to the current RM1,700 minimum wage to better align worker pay with rising productivity.

Anwar emphasized that while the government respects the Federal Constitution and the King’s decision regarding the conditional pardon of former Prime Minister Najib Razak, the administration maintains a zero-tolerance policy toward corruption. He asserted that those responsible for plundering national wealth through institutions such as 1MDB, Felda, and Lembaga Tabung Haji must be held accountable.

Addressing wage disparities, Anwar noted that while productivity in Malaysia is increasing, wage growth remains low. He suggested that the RM3,100 minimum wage established for government-linked companies (GLCs) should serve as a benchmark for the private sector, particularly for companies reporting high profits.
