Malaysia government to hold meeting on rising electricity bills

The Malaysian government is convening a special meeting to address rising electricity bills and evaluate mitigation measures for affected households. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has called for discussions involving the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA), the Energy Commission, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), and the Ministry of Finance to study the impact of global energy supply disruptions and domestic consumption trends.

Economic Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir noted that a lagging effect from the global energy crisis is impacting natural gas and coal prices, which in turn affects electricity generation costs. While approximately 80 percent of domestic users consuming below 600 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per month remain protected under targeted subsidies, those exceeding this threshold are subject to the Automatic Fuel Cost Adjustment (AFA) mechanism.

Increased electricity usage has been attributed to recent hot weather and haze, pushing some households past the 600 kWh threshold. In response to these rising costs, some political and consumer advocacy groups have called for greater transparency regarding tariff justifications and suggested incentivizing solar energy adoption to provide long-term relief for households.
