Malaysian government cost of living mitigation measures

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has introduced several initiatives to mitigate rising living costs. Initial measures included increasing monthly petrol and diesel subsidy quotas, raising revenue thresholds for e-invoicing exemptions to support small businesses, and allocating grants for hawkers and small traders. The government also expanded microfinancing and directed seized anti-corruption funds toward education and healthcare.

To address rising electricity bills, the government is convening a special meeting involving the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA), the Energy Commission, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), and the Ministry of Finance. Economic Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir noted that a lagging effect from the global energy crisis is impacting natural gas and coal prices, which affects electricity generation costs.

While targeted subsidies protect approximately 80% of domestic users consuming 600 kWh or less per month, those exceeding this threshold are subject to the Automatic Fuel Cost Adjustment (AFA) mechanism. Increased usage, attributed to recent hot weather and haze, has pushed some households past this threshold. In response, political and consumer advocacy groups have called for greater transparency regarding tariff justifications and suggested incentivizing solar energy adoption to provide long-term relief.
