Anwar Ibrahim elevates India-Malaysia ties to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is conducting an official visit to India to attend the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi. During the summit, Anwar held bilateral talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, where both leaders agreed to elevate their bilateral relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. The discussions covered several key sectors, including trade, investment, defense, security, semiconductors, the digital economy, and tourism.

Anwar also engaged in various diplomatic and cultural activities. He met with Indian opposition leaders Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra for breakfast and held discussions with world leaders regarding the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and tensions in West Asia. In Kerala, Anwar met with Grand Mufti Sheikh Abubakr Ahmad to discuss educational and cultural cooperation, receiving the Sheikh Abu Bakar Foundation’s ‘Excellence Award’ for his contributions to humanitarian service and international dialogue.

Beyond formal diplomacy, Anwar’s visit gained significant social media attention when he performed a rendition of the 1965 Kishore Kumar classic ‘Khwab Ho Tum Ya Koi Haqeeqat’ during a BRICS gala dinner. Additionally, Malaysia has agreed to the establishment of an Indian Consulate General in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. Following his time in India, Anwar is scheduled to visit the Maldives to strengthen cooperation in trade and digital sectors.
