India-Malaysia diplomatic relations enhancement
Overview
During the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi elevated bilateral relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. The leaders discussed cooperation in trade, investment, defense, security, semiconductors, the digital economy, and tourism. As part of this strengthening relationship, Malaysia agreed to establish an Indian Consulate General in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.
During his official visit, Ibrahim also engaged in diplomatic and cultural activities, including meeting with Indian opposition leaders Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and discussing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and tensions in West Asia. He also gained social media attention for performing a rendition of the 1965 Kishore Kumar classic ‘Khwab Ho Tum Ya Koi Haqeeqat’ during a BRICS gala dinner.
Following the summit, Ibrahim traveled to Kerala, where he met with Grand Mufti of India Kanthapuram AP Aboobacker Musliyar at Markaz in Kozhikode. Ibrahim attended a remembrance and prayer meeting at the Sunni Cultural Centre, attended by approximately 2,000 students and scholars. During this visit, he was presented with the Sheikh Abu Bakar Foundation’s ‘Excellence Award’ for his contributions to public service, education, and international dialogue. Discussions in Kerala focused on educational exchanges, cultural cooperation, the welfare of the Indian diaspora in Malaysia, and the ethical implications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) regarding faith, ethics, and intellectual freedom. Following his time in India, Ibrahim was scheduled to visit the Maldives to strengthen cooperation in trade and digital sectors.
