Apetit SHPK under scrutiny after seizure of 103 tons of expired meat

Authorities in Montenegro and Kosovo have intensified inspections of the company Apetit SHPK following the seizure of large quantities of expired Brazilian beef. Montenegro's Customs Administration reported seizing a transit shipment of approximately 24,650 kg of frozen beef at the Port of Bar, which had expired in May 2026.

This incident follows a previous seizure of three containers containing roughly 77,841 kg of beef. In that earlier case, authorities discovered that original labels had been removed and replaced with new ones to hide the expired dates. In total, customs officials have intercepted nearly 103 tons of expired meat intended for the Kosovo market.

The Kosovo Food and Veterinary Agency (AUV) has implemented enhanced controls on Apetit, including auditing import documentation, product origins, and distribution quantities. The agency is conducting laboratory analyses and internal inspections of warehouses. Authorities have notified the World Customs Organization regarding these attempts to distribute expired meat through regional ports.
