Meat safety investigations in Montenegro and Kosovo

Overview

Authorities in Montenegro and Kosovo have intensified investigations into the company Apetit SHPK following the seizure of approximately 103 tons of expired Brazilian beef intended for the Kosovo market. The seizures included a transit shipment of roughly 24,650 kg at the Port of Bar and an earlier discovery of three containers where original labels had been removed and replaced to hide expiration dates.

In response to these incidents, the Kosovo Food and Veterinary Agency has implemented enhanced controls, including auditing documentation and conducting laboratory analyses. Montenegro has also responded by implementing a ban on importing meat from Brazil that was certified after September 3. Montenegrin inspectors are now conducting enhanced sampling of all Brazilian beef shipments and 100% inspections of all poultry shipments from the country to ensure compliance with food safety regulations.
