Osun State election tensions rise amid campaign rallies and legal disputes

Political tensions are escalating in Osun State ahead of the August 15 governorship election. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ADC National Chairman David Mark led a major campaign rally in Osogbo to support candidate Najeem Salam, urging voters to reject other parties.

Governor Ademola Adeleke, running under the Accord Party, has defended his administration against allegations of voter intimidation. First Lady Titilola Adeleke led a protest at the state police headquarters, alleging that Accord Party leaders are being targeted for arrest and claiming the Commissioner for Environment was stripped naked while in custody. The police have attributed the arrest of the Commissioner to a shooting incident during an APC campaign rally in Ilesa, which reportedly left four people injured.

Meanwhile, APC candidate Bola Oyebamiji is receiving support from President Bola Tinubu, who recently summoned 76 party leaders to Abuja to address internal disquiet and ensure a victory. Additionally, Prof. Chris Imumolen, factional chairman of the Accord Party, has predicted Adeleke's defeat, citing an ongoing legal dispute over party leadership currently before the Federal High Court in Abuja.
