Osun State governorship election developments

Overview

As the August 15 Osun State governorship election approaches, political tensions have intensified following a shooting at an APC rally in Ilesa. The incident, which injured several individuals including a 14-year-old boy, has sparked accusations of violence between the APC and the Accord Party.

In a significant political shift, APGA candidate Adesina Adeyemi-Doro has withdrawn from the race to endorse APC candidate Bola Oyebamiji. This endorsement follows a similar move by former Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola and other prominent PDP leaders, who have declared support for Oyebamiji. Meanwhile, Atiku Abubakar and African Democratic Congress (ADC) leaders held a major campaign rally in Osogbo to support candidate Najeem Salam.

Legal and political controversies continue to unfold. Osun State Commissioner for Environment and Sanitation, Mayowa Adejoorin, was arrested and detained following the Ilesa incident. Although released on bail, Adejoorin alleged he was subjected to humiliating treatment by police. First Lady Titilola Adeleke has since led protests at the state police headquarters against alleged voter intimidation and the mistreatment of Accord Party leaders in custody.

Internal party dynamics remain volatile. Accord Party factional chairman Prof. Chris Imumolen has predicted the defeat of incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke, suggesting any victory could be overturned by an ongoing leadership dispute in the Federal High Court. To manage internal friction, President Bola Tinubu summoned 76 APC leaders from Osun to Abuja to ensure unity behind Oyebamiji. Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has cleared 14 candidates to contest, though the PDP and Labour Party remain absent from the final list due to nomination delays.
