APM Terminals Nigeria calls for green maritime infrastructure investment
APM Terminals Nigeria is advocating for a shift from policy commitments to the development of bankable green infrastructure projects to decarbonize the nation’s maritime sector. Speaking at the second Decarbonizing Infrastructure in Nigeria (DIN) Summit in Abuja, Chairman Frederik Klinke emphasized that while Nigeria has made progress in maritime reforms, the focus must now move toward implementation to attract long-term investment.
Klinke stated, “Policy alone does not reduce emissions. Strategies do not decarbonize ports. Frameworks do not attract investment. Projects do.” He highlighted the necessity of regulatory clarity, reliable emissions data, and better integration between ports, roads, rail, and inland logistics to ensure economic and environmental benefits.
CEO Koen De Backker added that reducing emissions starts with improving logistics efficiency. Proposed methods include reducing equipment usage and fuel consumption, minimizing truck congestion, improving cargo flow, and preparing for lower-emission technologies to support the broader energy transition.
