APM Terminals maritime decarbonization efforts
Overview
APM Terminals Nigeria is advocating for a transition from maritime policy commitments to the development of bankable green infrastructure projects to decarbonize the nation’s maritime sector.
At the Decarbonizing Infrastructure in Nigeria (DIN) Summit in Abuja, Chairman Frederik Klinke emphasized that “Policy alone does not reduce emissions. Strategies do not decarbonize ports. Frameworks do not attract investment. Projects do.” He noted the need for regulatory clarity, reliable emissions data, and improved integration between ports, roads, rail, and inland logistics.
CEO Koen De Backker added that decarbonization begins with improving logistics efficiency, suggesting methods such as reducing equipment usage and fuel consumption, minimizing truck congestion, and improving cargo flow to support the energy transition.
