OpenAI and Anthropic adopt Apple Mac hardware for AI agent training

Major AI laboratories, including OpenAI and Anthropic, are increasingly utilizing Apple's Mac mini and Mac Studio hardware to support specialized artificial intelligence workloads. OpenAI has reportedly purchased tens of thousands of these units to facilitate reinforcement learning and the development of AI agents capable of operating computer interfaces. Anthropic is similarly leveraging Mac hardware, primarily by renting capacity through Amazon Web Services (AWS).

The demand for these desktop machines is driven by the unique architecture of Apple Silicon, specifically its unified memory system, which allows the CPU and GPU to share a large memory pool. This is particularly advantageous for running large AI models and agentic workflows that require high memory bandwidth and low latency. This surge in enterprise demand has reportedly prompted Apple to accelerate the release of its new Mac product lines, featuring M5 and M6 chips, earlier than its typical autumn schedule.

While these compact machines are not intended to replace massive GPU clusters used for large-scale model pre-training, they are becoming essential for tactical tasks like agent training and local inference. This shift has contributed to a 29% year-over-year growth in Apple's Mac segment revenue. However, the rapid rise in institutional interest has also highlighted challenges, including global memory shortages and Apple's need to further develop dedicated enterprise support and developer relations for the AI sector.
