Apple explores M8 Ultra-based AI servers and Baltra chip

Overview

Apple is advancing plans for a strategic return to the enterprise server market, targeting AI developers, corporations, and government agencies. This initiative, which marks a potential return to the commercial server business since the discontinuation of the Xserve line, focuses on hardware designed for AI inference workloads.

The proposed servers are expected to utilize future M8 Ultra silicon, potentially configured in clusters of two or four chips. To enable high-speed interconnectivity and industry-standard data center scaling, Apple is reportedly in technical discussions with Nvidia to integrate NVLink and NVLink-C2C technologies, specifically considering Nvidia’s ‘NVLink Fusion’ interconnect technology.

This hardware push is intended to bolster Apple’s Private Cloud Compute network and reduce its reliance on third-party cloud providers. The project, which has reportedly been in development for approximately one year, is said to have support from hardware leadership, including CEO John Ternus. The move is driven by surging demand for Apple Silicon in AI workloads, as companies like OpenAI and Anthropic have reportedly purchased tens of thousands of Mac mini and Mac Studio units for AI development and inference tasks. Specifically, OpenAI has reportedly utilized these units for reinforcement learning tasks.

While these M8 Ultra-based servers are not expected to reach the market before 2029, reports indicate work is also underway on a dedicated AI accelerator codenamed ‘Baltra’, which could debut as early as late 2026 or early 2027. As with previous reports, the project remains in an evaluative phase and could be modified or canceled.
