Apple AirPods 5 feature upgraded audio and improved water resistance

Apple has released the AirPods 5, featuring significant internal upgrades despite maintaining a similar physical design to previous models. The new earphones include a recalibrated audio system designed for fuller bass and clearer highs, along with improved noise-cancellation algorithms and a user-adjustable EQ.

Two versions are available: a standard model for $129 and a version with a wireless charging case for $149. The more expensive model includes on-stem volume controls, allowing users to swipe up or down to adjust audio levels. Additionally, the device's durability has been improved, with the water resistance rating increasing from IP54 to IP57, meaning the earbuds can now survive brief submersion in water.

The AirPods 5 utilize an open-ear design that rests in the earlobe rather than inserting into the ear canal. While this design offers a different fit than the silicone-tipped AirPods Pro, it integrates deeply with the Apple ecosystem and includes new features such as Live Translation.
