Apple AirPods 5 and Pro 3 launch and market updates
Overview
Following the September 2026 launch of the AirPods 5 and AirPods Pro 3, Apple released a firmware update alongside iOS 27 that introduces a custom three-band equalizer (EQ). This feature is compatible with all H2 chip-equipped models, including the AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3, AirPods 4, and AirPods Max 2. The AirPods Pro 3 feature a redesigned fit with five ear tip sizes (XXS to L) and include heart rate detection for fitness tracking via the iPhone Fitness app. Apple claims the Pro 3’s active noise cancellation (ANC) can eliminate up to twice the noise of the previous generation, though some reports suggest it may be up to three times more effective. The model also supports live translation via Apple Intelligence and offers up to eight hours of battery life with ANC enabled. In a regulatory development, the US FDA has approved software-based hearing aid functionality for certain consumer electronics, including the AirPods Pro 2, allowing them to be used as over-the-counter hearing aids for mild to moderate hearing loss. The AirPods 5 utilize an open-fit design with a multiport acoustic architecture and next-generation Adaptive EQ. Apple states its ANC is up to 50% more effective than the previous AirPods 4 models, though some reports suggest it may be up to 1.5 times more effective. The AirPods 5 are available in two configurations: a base model with a USB-C case ($129 in the US) providing 4 hours of battery life with ANC enabled, and a premium version with a wireless charging case ($149 in the US) providing 5 hours of battery life, volume swipe controls, and a built-in speaker for the Find My network. Both models feature an IP57 rating.
