Apple AirPods 5 introduce active noise cancellation to open-ear design

Apple has released the AirPods 5, featuring a redesigned acoustic architecture and the introduction of active noise cancellation (ANC) to its open-ear lineup. The update includes two variants: a base model with a USB-C charging case and a version equipped with a wireless charging case.

The wireless charging model offers enhanced features, such as a volume control slider on the stems and improved battery life, providing up to 5 hours of listening time with ANC enabled. Both models benefit from an upgraded IP57 rating for improved dust and water resistance compared to previous generations. The wireless case also includes a built-in speaker to assist with locating the device via the Find My network.

While the open-ear design provides comfort and avoids the pressure of silicone tips, sound isolation depends heavily on individual fit. The audio profile is described as having a warm signature with emphasized sub-bass, though some users may find the midrange and treble less detailed. Software updates include a new three-band equalizer in iOS settings to allow for basic audio customization.
