Apple AirPods 5 receives improved repairability score from iFixit

The repairability laboratory iFixit has awarded the Apple AirPods 5 a score of 2 out of 10, marking the first time in a decade that an AirPods model has received a score higher than zero.

Previous generations consistently received a 0/10 rating due to batteries being soldered directly to the circuit boards, making them nearly impossible to repair without destroying the device. The AirPods 5 features a redesigned internal architecture using a pin connector for the battery, similar to the design seen in the AirPods 3. This allows the battery to be disconnected without specialized tools, though iFixit noted that a household hairdryer can be used to safely heat the casing for disassembly.

Despite this improvement in the earbuds themselves, the charging case remains extremely difficult to repair. The case utilizes plastic welding instead of screws, and iFixit reported that attempting to access the internal components often results in damage to the outer shell. Furthermore, Apple has not yet included the AirPods 5 in its Self Service Repair program, nor has the company provided official replacement parts or repair manuals for this model.
