Apple and LG partner to develop smart home accessories

Apple is reportedly collaborating with LG Electronics to develop a new suite of smart home accessories designed to bolster the Apple Home ecosystem. The partnership aims to expand Apple’s presence in the connected home market, competing more directly with established players like Amazon.

The planned lineup includes seven devices: a smart video doorbell, a smart thermostat, a smart deadbolt lock, a temperature sensor, and three security cameras (indoor, outdoor, and a floodlight model). While Apple is heavily involved in the design, engineering, and feature planning, the products will be sold under the LG brand. LG will be responsible for manufacturing and providing technical support.

Technical specifications indicate that the devices will support major communication protocols, including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Thread, and Matter. Notably, the smart lock is expected to incorporate Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology to enable precise, automatic unlocking as users approach. The smart thermostat is rumored to feature a 60GHz radar module for human presence detection.

These accessories are intended to integrate with Apple’s upcoming smart home hub, which is expected to be announced on October 13. While Apple’s core hardware may launch soon, the LG-branded accessories are expected to reach consumers several months later.
