A legal battle between Apple and OpenAI has escalated over allegations of trade secret theft. Apple filed suit in San Jose, California, accusing OpenAI of orchestrating a campaign to steal confidential information through former employees to advance OpenAI's secretive consumer hardware projects.

Apple claims OpenAI's actions constitute "repeated instances of deliberate theft." To demonstrate urgency, Apple cited reports of a forthcoming screenless smart speaker being developed by OpenAI in collaboration with Jony Ive’s studio, LoveFrom.

OpenAI has countered by requesting a permanent dismissal of the case, labeling the lawsuit "baseless" and describing it as "rotten to its core." OpenAI’s legal team argues that Apple is using the litigation to compensate for its own failures in talent retention and AI integration. They further asserted that Apple employees had actually contacted former staff members for technical assistance regarding files and documents.

Federal judge Edward Davila is scheduled to hear requests regarding the dismissal and potential injunctions on October 1.
