Apple expands iPhone car integration with CarKey and wireless CarPlay adapters
New wireless CarPlay adapters let iPhone users connect to a vehicle’s infotainment system without a cable, provided the car already supports wired CarPlay. Brands such as Ottocast, Carlinkit, Motorola, XUDA, ATOTO and others offer dongles that create a private Wi‑Fi network and pair via Bluetooth, allowing automatic launch of CarPlay when the car is started.
Since iOS 17, Apple’s CarKey feature in the Wallet app enables the iPhone to function as a digital car key. Using NFC or Ultra‑Wideband (UWB), compatible models from Hyundai, Kia, Genesis, Honda, BMW, Mercedes‑Benz, Audi and Volkswagen can be unlocked, started and locked directly from the phone. The system works even if the iPhone’s battery is depleted, thanks to an Energy Reserve mode that keeps the NFC chip active.
