Apple iPhone car integration

Overview

Apple’s CarPlay Ultra, launched in May 2025, turned the iPhone into the primary vehicle interface, initially limited to the Aston Martin DBX in the United States and Canada and requiring dedicated hardware and an iPhone 12 or later with iOS 18.5. By mid-2026 the rollout continued, while security experts highlighted a low-cost foil-wrapped Faraday cage as a partial defence against relay-attack theft of traditional smart-key fobs. In July 2026 Apple broadened the ecosystem with wireless CarPlay adapters from brands such as Ottocast, Carlinkit and Motorola. The dongles create a private Wi-Fi network and pair via Bluetooth, allowing automatic CarPlay launch on any car that already supports wired CarPlay. At the same time, the CarKey feature in Apple Wallet, using NFC or Ultra-Wideband, enabled unlocking, starting and locking on a growing list of models—including Hyundai, Kia, Genesis, Honda, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi and Volkswagen—and remained functional even when the iPhone’s battery was depleted thanks to an Energy Reserve mode. In August 2026, Volkswagen expanded its digital key capabilities by integrating Apple Wallet support for selected ID-series models, such as the ID. 7, ID. Polo, or ID. 3 Neo. This integration allows users to move beyond the proprietary VW Mobile Key app, enabling digital key storage and family-member sharing. To use the feature, owners require vehicle software version 6.0.1, a Volkswagen ID account, identity verification, and an active VW-Connect contract. The update also facilitates “comfort-opening” functions, such as remotely lowering windows, opening a panoramic sunroof, or activating seat ventilation. Future support for Google Wallet is expected. Late in August 2026, code discovered in the iOS 27 beta indicated that Apple is expanding digital car key functionality to support Xiaomi vehicles.
