Apple extends free satellite features for iPhone users

Apple has announced a one-year extension for free satellite connectivity on supported iPhone models. Users of the iPhone 14, iPhone 15, and iPhone 16 will maintain access to satellite features, including Emergency SOS, which were previously scheduled to expire in the coming weeks.

These services allow users to send text messages and share location data in areas without cellular coverage, a feature that has assisted emergency responders in locating individuals in remote locations. While Apple characterizes this access as a ‘free trial’ and may charge for these services in the future, the extension provides continued access for existing users.

The satellite functionality is powered by Globalstar. Amazon is currently in the process of acquiring Globalstar, a deal that includes the takeover of Apple’s 20% stake in the communications company. Amazon has stated it will continue to provide and improve satellite services for iPhones through Globalstar. Future developments in the sector include plans by SpaceX and AST SpaceMobile to offer cellular-focused broadband via satellite constellations.
